Carpet Materials – Part 1

They are soft, they warm up your house and they can do wonders for the look of your home. But when it comes to choosing carpets, what material should you go for?

Carpets are made of fibers synthetic or natural. Those fibers are responsible for the different characteristics that define a carpet and that is the first thing you should consider.

SYNTHETIC FIBERS

Nylon

Nylon is the most popular material for carpets. It comes in a huge variety of colors and textures so a nylon carpet is your best choice if you have a very particular color in mind. Nylon is also not a rigid material therefore making the carpet quite flexible which is good, if you are planning on putting it in an area of the house that is used very often. It is a very strong material which is excellent since it means that you can mistreat your carpet and get away with it easily and it is easy to clean. On the downside, it is indeed synthetic so you might have a problem with odors of you have pets or children that are prone to accidents and its manufacture includes the use of chemicals.

Polyester

Polyester carpets are very resistant to stains and all kinds of soiling. They react very well to cleaning but they do require loads of it. They look very beautiful which is good if you want a carpet that looks expensive but it isn’t but there is a downside. Polyester carpets are not suitable for areas of your house that are used constantly the reason being that it is not flexible and its shape might become distorted. Its color will not fade but its looks will. Also, polyester carpets do not come in a wide variety of colors due to the fact that the fiber is difficult to dye.

Acrylic

Acrylic carpets have all the same advantages as polyester carpets plus they are sun, static, mildew, moisture and fading resistant. They look great and they are priced quite reasonably however, they do tear easily and they do become deformed if placed in heavy traffic areas of your home.

PET

PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate which is the material water bottles are made of. PET carpets are made from 100% recycled water bottles (or other bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate) and they behave just like Nylon carpets. The best thing about them however is that they are made from recycled materials which s good for the environment and your home and after they’ve been worn down they can be recycled again.
